What medical coding actually is and what is it used for?

In plane text, medical coding is conversion of hospital patient data in to alphanumeric data whereby it would be easy for the insurance companies to verify the patient details. This means the coder should accurately translate the data into alphanumeric codes. If the coder misses something from the patient record then it is called under coding. If the coder codes something which is not in the medical record then it is called up coding.

For the coding professionals, accuracy is an important factor and it may cause someone to loose his job if he fails to accurately code the medical records.

Insurance companies use this coded date to pay the bills of the patient. Some govt agencies also use this data for various purposes including statistical analysis of diseases and their causes and demography.
